How it all started
We get asked all the time how we got into organics. It all started one Sunday actually.
For 2 years I had been suffering from a very painful, hormone-related health problem. I awoke on a Sunday morning to the sound of Jillian Michaels (from ‘The Biggest Loser’) on public television giving a motivational speech about health, nutrition and how our hormones are affected by everything that we eat. She introduced me to a very simple yet profound idea. Our bodies are designed to process whole, real, natural and organic substances. Anything fake (“Frankenfood,” as she called it) would only serve to confuse our bodies. Given enough time, fake food throws our hormones out of balance.
I heard the ring of truth. Our hormones control virtually everything about us. Every bite of fake food that we take and every toxic chemical that we use and inhale tells our hormones to do things that we would never want them to do. When the body becomes symptomatic, it is sending you a warning signal, “You are in DANGER- something’s got to change!”
It was then that I decided be my own advocate and to make better choices. I had always considered myself to be a healthy person, but now I started to pay even closer attention. It was frustrating at first.
Reading labels is not always easy! “What was ‘methylchloroisothiazolinone’?” I thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could make it easier for people to know what they’re consuming? Wouldn’t it be great to have someone whom I could trust to hand-select and test a product for me? Wouldn’t it be awesome if I could actually try a product to make sure that I like it before I spend my hard-earned money on it?”
Initially, I began researching using Google and weeding out GMO’s, synthetic pesticides, preservatives, hormones and harmful chemicals out of my diet, gradually replacing them with all natural and organic foods.
Then it occurred to me that as a hair stylist, my skin was absorbing toxic, cancer-causing substances every day. The fumes that I was breathing in would be so strong, it would often take my breath away. I also discovered that many of my clients were seeking more natural and organic hair and skin care alternatives. So, I expanded my quest to live my whole life as unaffected and simple as possible. Admittedly, it’s been a long, continual and arduous process.
We use the best products
In January 2013, I proudly opened Modern Organic Salon & Spa (MOSS). The name Modern Organic Salon encompasses everything that I believe in… combining the latest advancements and techniques in professional hair care with the greenest professional grooming products available.
MOSS is currently using Organic Color Systems, which is a true non-ammonia, permanent, professional color line that offers 100% gray coverage. We also offer Organic Curl Systems which gives the possibility of permanent curl or straightening without ammonia, thioglycolates and sodium hydroxide.
Our newest addition is the KeraGreen Keratin and Protein treatment which blows those toxic, formaldehyde-based blowouts out of the water with a natural alternative that is actually good for your hair!
Some of the professional hair care products we offer (that I have researched and use on myself) are Onesta, Holistix and DermOrganic. These offer a full line of professional shampoos, conditioners, mousses, gels, pastes, hairsprays and serums that actually work and are free of harmful chemicals. We even sell non-toxic, odorless and safe nail polishes, like Zoya.
We are always adding to our inventory and will spotlight new things as we get them in.
As your hair care professionals, it is our job to know what is in our products and to help you to make an informed decision about what you buy.
Our invitation to you
We would love for you to visit the salon to sample any product to make sure that it works for you. As new information, technology and products become available we will strive to bring it to you first.
For the organic savvy client, we value your input! Please feel free to let us know about new products, submit articles, case studies and anything that you can do to help the green evolution in our industry.
I am happy to report that my health problem has subsided since I’ve gone organic. Although we live in a world full of chemicals and it’s almost impossible to eliminate them out of our lives completely, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to educate yourself on what you are putting in and on your bodies. I continue to learn every day.
We are none all-knowing, but together all growing. Let’s take this journey together!
